迪士尼公司選擇花木蘭這樣的故事，卻不選用中國四美人、女皇帝武則天為電影主題，一定有其考量。
傳統的價值觀念，女孩就是該有「女孩的」樣子，男孩就是該有「男孩的」樣子。
當一個人意識到真實的自己存在本是喜事一樁，但是沒想到在文化包袱極重的壓力下，反倒是一件痛苦難堪的事。
「內在我」與「公眾我」的不協調，使得花木蘭只能私下獨自一人放聲高歌，抒發心中的苦悶。
而匈奴的入侵、外在大環境轉惡，像命運常對人開玩笑般地竟然對花木蘭的生命是種轉機。
因著擔心父親，小女人選擇以男性的身份從軍去、生活著，在性格上她與眾軍中伙伴如呼吸自然般相和，她不用扭捏作態、被限制在一小女子該有的閨秀風範。
花木蘭生命的悲劇轉為喜劇是因為恰巧搭救了皇帝，而使得大家重新肯定她的能力，而不再用肉體是女性而忽視，使得電影音樂『Reflection』不再是悲歌，「Now I see　That if I were truly to be myself　I would break my famlys heart」
處在這種功利社會文化下，能活得越來越像自己，仔細想來也真不是件簡單的事。
從小到大選填的志願、就業的方向、與人相交真能隨心所欲嗎？
即使是二十世紀末的今日，你我能真實地照的自己的本相而活，暢快自發地活，而且活得越來越像自己的有幾人？
